Our client, Caltrans, manages more than 50,000 miles of highway and freeway lanes, provides inter-city rail services, permits more than 400 public-use airports and special-use hospital heliports, and works with local agencies across 12 districts in support of a safe, sustainable, integrated and efficient transportation system statewide.
With more than 600 construction projects ongoing in the state of California Caltrans has turned to the latest technology solutions built for the transportation construction industry to help them deliver safer projects on time and budget. They sought out the HeadLight project intelligence platform because of a need relating to their Daily Construction Reports (DCRs). The manual process of doing DCRs was taking time away from inspections. They needed to improve the quality of the observations in their reports while reducing the amount of time it takes to create one. They were also concerned about risk resulting from a lack of high-quality observations and knew that the ability to add detailed inspection information, pictures, and video would help if there were any claims issued on the project.

Change is difficult to manage in any large government organization, and the introduction and adoption of the HeadLight platform were a concern for the agency. It was not only a workflow change but also a technology change, moving from manual pen and paper to electronic inspections on iPads. The agency says that thanks to the impressive new client program provided by the Pavia Systems’ Customer Experience team at the launch of their HeadLight engagement the team was adequately trained and the fear associated with the introduction of new technology significantly reduced.
“HeadLight gives our inspectors the ability to find, access, and share reliable information in a way that was previously unavailable. It provides the Department the ability to find information when they need it and specifically what happened on that date.”

Just months after implementing HeadLight there are clear and proven benefits in both the number and quality of inspection observations. The time to create DCRs has been reduced as has the amount of time it takes to search for information. Caltrans is considered a leader in leveraging innovation to deliver transportation projects and they continue to look at expanding their use of technology to deliver deeper project intelligence benefits across all projects.
